This is my favorite holiday! Ted and I started our own Thanksgiving traditions thirty years ago. I made my first pan(s) of dressing (my pans were not big enough... so dressing filled numerous pans the first year and every year since!) Ted and I spend lots of "together" time, preparing our Thanksgiving feast! I love that part of this holiday! Let the festivities begin!

We received the BOX TRUNK SHOW today and Ginnie and I were able to get it out before we left tonight. You don't want to miss this one!!!! There are forty-three trays of gemstones, fresh water pearls, crystals, clasps, pendants, and more. There are items that I have not seen in a long time, as well as many things I haven't ever seen! I promise you'll find some beautiful, high-end semi-precious gemstones. There are only one to two strands of most items, so if you find something you like, get it! We won't be able to get anymore of these items from this vendor at this time.

There is always something going on at A BEAD BOUTIQUE; however, it seems that we have even more than usual "going on" in the shop! First, we have sold lots of jewelry... more than usual, and I am working hard to replace or finish jewelry! Love it! We are getting ready for a class this Saturday "PMC BEADS" with Paula McDowell! Everyone looks forward to Paula's visits!

THE BEAD MOBILE COMETH! Four words we all love to hear! Friday night we have a birthday party for Rachel and a few of her friends! Saturday night I have a piece of jewelry to be auctioned during VAN GOGH, a fund raiser for River Oaks. Ted also has a painting that he and Kelly Bledsoe worked on. I always look forward to this event! Sunday we join other businesses across CenLa in our CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE. We will feature several of our customers, who will be selling jewelry and different items that they have made! Join us Sunday afternoon 1 - 5 p.m. I love seeing what my customers do with beads purchased from A BEAD BOUTIQUE... and I look forward to seeing the jewelry this Sunday afternoon. I love featuring our customers' and their jewelry! Yesterday I was treated to a "sneak peak" of Debra Hertz's fall show coming up next week. Over and over she said, "I got these beads from you!" Debra adds beautiful antique beads from around the globe. The results are beautiful! Of course I had favorites from her jewelry... and to her surprise, I liked one with a "horn" and multi-colored whitehearts! Great job, Debra!

BOX TRUNK SHOW ARRIVING TODAY! I am expecting a box trunk show from south Florida today. Eva promises some great gemstones and pendants! I'll get the show out as soon as possible!

This is one of the pieces I've made for the "DESIGNATHON", our 3rd annual fund raiser for the FOOD BANK of Central Louisiana... Let the "holidays" begin! Ready or not! I'm not ready; are you? Well, here we go... one day at a time! One piece of jewelry at a time! I do love the holidays! It is my goal to enjoy every day and to remember the "Reason" for this season! I hope you'll join me in this endeavor!

My Uncle Tom passed away last Friday. I was in Shreveport yesterday for his funeral. Uncle Tom was a Methodist preacher, who pastored many churches in his 85 years. During the last 10 years of his life, he was the Chaplain for the North Louisiana GoodWill organization. The memorial service was truly a celebration of his life. His grandchildren spoke and shared some sweet memories. Uncle Tom was in the navy, and his grandson, also in the navy, presented Uncle Tom's three children with an American flag. It was a very touching and sweet moment! My thoughts were on the heavenly reunion last Friday morning, when Uncle Tom was reunited with Aunt Natalie and the many more who were there waiting for him.

I will be out of the shop on Tuesday... spending a little time with my grandsons! Thank you to Pam and Ginnie for taking care of A BEAD BOUTIQUE for me!

Our 3rd annual "DESIGNATHON" is getting close. I have received several pieces from customers. The poultry is really fresh at Sam's! Last Thursday Fran and I were picking up a few things for the weekend. Fran was convinced I had one 'pain pill too many' when I said, "Fran, there is a chicken by your car!" I should have photographed Fran's expression when she walked around and actually saw the chicken... a Rhode Island Red hen, to be exact. We created quite a scene... well, actually the chicken was at center stage. It was good to laugh! "A merry heart is like good medicine!"

There really is always something going on at A BEAD BOUTIQUE! I spent a little time in the shop this afternoon and enjoyed seeing everyone. Abubakar, one of our vendors from New York, stopped by the shop with his extensive selection of African trade beads. Debra Hertz was there to teach us all a little more about these wonderful beads! My problem is that I am drawn to the most expensive beads. He did have some great moderately priced beads. I hope to get them out in the next day or so. Keep watching!!

INTRO TO PMC CLASS this Friday

We still have an opening in this class. The cost is $135 which includes the use of tools, instruction and silver clay. Paula McDowell is our instructor. The class is 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. (approximate time) Call the shop if you are interested.

RINGS PMC CLASS on Saturday

Learn to make beautiful rings using precious metal clay. Intro to PMC with Paula is required for this class. The cost is $185 and includes the use of tools, instruction, and silver clay. The class is 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (approximate time) Call the shop if you are interested.

SATURDAY "DESIGNING" with Plated Metals "CONTEST"

Our vendor from Gordon's will be in the shop on Saturday. He will have product available for you to 'create' jewelry. He is looking for jewelry designed using their plated metals. There will be no cost for the materials. He will take the pieces back to be photographed in the new e-catalog. So, in order to keep things interesting, we will have a contest, judging the items that you create. We will have prizes. Come by the shop, spend a little time with the vendor, and create some beautiful jewelry.

Not quite back to normal...

Thank you for the calls, visits, emails, food, prayers, and many acts of kindness this week. Two major events, back-to-back, and you have been so supportive! Thank you so much! I will see the doctor tomorrow and see what he has to say. I am tired and still sore, but I am reminded that it is less than two weeks since surgery.

I am not yet 100%. The plan is that I will rest today. Ted actually has me under "house arrest". We will make a decision about my work schedule after I see the doctor tomorrow. I do miss A BEAD BOUTIQUE!

I received a box with some new items. We'll work to get those out. Remember that there is room for another student in the INTRO TO PRECIOUS METAL CLAY CLASS on Friday. Call the shop if you are interested. Saturday we will have the vendor from LasVegas. Watch for information about SAM & JAMES on the 19th and 20th at A BEAD BOUTIQUE!

One phone call can change things...

I remember telling my boys that when they were young... I still say, "You are one phone call away from owning all of my stuff!" It is my rather light-hearted way of reminding the boys (and me) that life is sometimes all too brief. The phone rang Tuesday afternoon late... my brother-in-law, Wade Bordelon, calling to tell us that Patsy (his wife and our youngest sister) had collapsed on the floor. The paramedics and emergency personnel worked with her for a long time, unable to revive her.

48 seems too young to die. She will miss out watching her grandchildren grow up. Patsy was enjoying her new home (after her Pineville home burned a couple of years ago). She was in the doll club, loved collecting jewelry, and many other different types of collectibles. She even had a selection of beads! Being the youngest of us four girls, she was definitely spoiled. Her husband, Wade, continued that tradition, too. He pretty much gave her whatever she wanted... even a cruise of a lifetime this past June.

So, this has been a week filled with lots of emotions! Sad, silly, exhaustion, and even some funny moments remembering those childhood things you shove aside for more grown-up experiences. Even though death is a natural part of living, it is very stressful on those left behind. There are lots of things to be done... and someone has to take care of all of those details. A "Celebration of One's Life" takes a little work! Wade has done a great job of planning out things that would have been very important to Patsy.

We will close the shop Saturday until around 1:00 or so. Pam has been wonderful to take care of things in the shop for me and Ginnie this week. We could not have made it without her! They both took care of things while I was out recovering... and that brings us to the subject of my recovery... I am taking things easy. I have many people watching me, making sure that I don't do anything that might hinder the process! I MISS A BEAD BOUTIQUE!!!

Still recovering at home, I am waiting to hear from Wilson who is now travelling to Central Louisiana with his wonderful selection of BEADS!!! BEADS!!! BEADS!!! I am having bead-withdrawal! Other than walking around in the back yard or out the driveway, I have not left this house. How do you spell "cabin fever"? It is okay... gonna be okay, that is! As soon as Wilson arrives and I get to look through fresh water pearls and gemstones, I will be okay!

I am waiting for Wilson to get to Alexandria. Pam will meet him at the shop so that he can set up. The plan is for the TRUNK SHOW to begin on Tuesday morning, 11 a.m. when the shop opens! Pam and Ginnie will be with Wilson. I look forward to spending some time in the shop! You know what this means? You get to shop from the TRUNK SHOW before me!!!!

I had the "small" surgery on Tuesday! Laparoscopic or not, "small" is not applicable when it is your tummy that has 11 cuts! The forty-five minute procedure lasted several hours. I spent the night at the new surgical hospital and came home yesterday afternoon. I am so glad to be home, even if getting up and down is presenting challenges! Ted is taking good care of me and Reecie is glad to have me all to herself!

Pam and Ginnie are taking care of things in the shop. Wilson called me yesterday. He will be at the shop, set up, ready for you Tuesday morning! He promises five times the inventory he brought the last time! He had great items... and this time he'll have a lot more! ORIENTAL CREST is one of Houston's best bead suppliers! You'll want to make Wilson feel very welcomed to A BEAD BOUTIQUE and Central Louisiana! I can always count on you to come out for great beads! I hope to see you there!

I do mean that! Everyone! We really enjoy meeting people in the shop. Today we had several new beaders stop by. One was from Wisconsin. We do enjoy meeting beaders. She and her family enjoyed the BEADS FOR GOOD trunk show, as well as the new plated items. Stop by the shop tomorrow while the selections are still good!

New items... the new plated swivel lobster in gold plate, antique copper, and gunmetal!

Shoplifters take note... we are watching! As a result of several episodes with shoplifters last week, I have implemented a new policy. All purses have to be left behind the shop counter or left in your vehicle. If you bring any type of beads in the shop, those must be presented to shop employees. We reserve the right to inspect those bags when you arrive in the shop and/or when you leave the shop. If you are uncomfortable with this policy, please leave your bags in the car. If you have beads or items in your pockets, please present those to the employee.

I really hate having to address the subject of shoplifting. Honestly, I have been very upset by these recent events. I know that I'm only talking about three or so customers. After last week and the boldness of the persons, I'm ready to pursue legal action. So, if you shoplift, you can look forward to seeing the sights of Alexandria from the back seat of a police car!

Finally, I know that more than likely the persons I'm angry with are not reading this note. I also know that the majority of my customers get as angry as me at the thought of someone taking beads from our bead store! Thank you for your continued support of me and A BEAD BOUTIQUE! You are the reason I do what I do every single day!

Fall... finally! This is my favorite time of year! I love it when you have that first noticeably cool morning! This morning anyone outside in the vicinity of my backyard at 6 a.m. heard me singing! Yes, I was outside, thanking God for a fabulous fall morning... singing, "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!" Me singing? Well, I would have been more comfortable playing my trumpet. Imagine that! My neighbors should be counting their blessings today! Shouldn't we all count our blessings... daily!

A BEAD BOUTIQUE will open Tuesday at 11 a.m. The BEADS FOR GOOD TRUNK SHOW continues this week. Pam and Ginnie will be in the shop, waiting for you! I will be out of the shop for a few days because I am having surgery tomorrow. The surgery is day surgery, but is supposed to require an overnight stay. At this time, the plan is to be at the surgery center... but insurance details have to be worked out. The procedure, repairing a hernia, should be fairly simple. When I was considering what to take with me, I wondered what "beads" to bring! We have lots of beading nurses! I'll keep you posted!

TRUNK SHOW CONTINUES...

Folks have been pleased with the BEADS FOR GOOD Trunk Show. We were very busy yesterday. I actually left the shop at 9 p.m. I could have worked on into the night... making jewelry, and still not be caught up! Love my job! I'll be back today, working on more jewelry!

NEW ITEMS... We have received several boxes this week of new items. We received some new plated items that have been a hit! NEW FLEUR DE LIS charms in black and old gold! Two new finishes that everyone loves! I opened the box, and the new charms disappeared! (They went home with very happy customers!) I am expecting another box today. Get your fleur de lis charms while they last! I also have those great bell cones that make really cool Christmas trees! They are going fast, too! I did receive another box of delicas that we will be working on soon! Watch for information!

Sam and James will not be in the shop this week for their much anticipated TRUNK SHOW. I have heard from quite a few, and you are all as disappointed as I am! They will be back, only later in the fall.

BEADS FOR GOOD box trunk show will arrive this week! It has been too long since we had one of their great boxes in the shop. Nir promises lots of gemstones in this box. It could arrive as early as Tuesday. Watch the blog for more information as soon as I know!

ORIENTAL CREST will be back at the shop October 5 and 6 with a great selection of gemstones, pearls, and more! Mark your calendars!

THIS WEEK... we are expecting lots of new items... including some new fleur de lis charms in different finishes, key and lock charms, and more! SUZI STASH SALE this week! Yes, I'm bringing some items to the shop from my home! I am having surgery next week, the 28th. Pam and Ginnie will be taking care of the shop for a few days. (My surgery will be day surgery, with one night in the hospital). Since my sweet hubby would love to sell all the beads from my "stash", I'm going to beat him to the draw! So what is the big deal anyway? I never get to take the classes because the shop is always hopping. Paula helped me a little on Friday evening and voila, here they are! I am wanting to make some of the free-form crosses and these were my first try! I did darken the fleur de lis and the leaf after this photo was taken. I like them better!

Marge brought a great selection with her for our first TRUNK SHOW of the fall 2010 series at A BEAD BOUTIQUE! Everyone has enjoyed her great selection of fresh water pearls, including some really great natural fresh water pearls (not dyed). They are large, with a nice patina. She also has some large coin pearls, I guess 20mm in diameter. You will find some baroque pearls that are white. These are fresh water pearls, not the glass commonly seen.

If you are in need of seed beads, her TOHO's are great. She has many colors and sizes, with great prices. She does have some "bulk" discounts. The more you buy, the more you save... up to 50% off her already great prices.

And then there is Bali Silver, Hill Tribe, and Vermeil. She has some chain, too. The GREAT WALL OF FINDINGS has not disappointed anyone so far! We open at 11 a.m. today and tomorrow. And it is a good thing! The air conditioner went out again. Today I have been back and forth with repairmen trying to get the unit repaired! It will hopefully be repaired by the end of the week!

It was very cool as we were "BEADING THE HEAT"! Folks were finishing projects... you know the ones that you just cannot seem to get done at home.

A BEAD BOUTIQUE will be closed August 16 - 21 for some repairs and deep cleaning. We will re-open on Tuesday, August 24 at 11 a.m. We will return to our normal hours of operation, opening at 11 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. We will close at 5:45 weekdays with the exception of Wednesday, when we will close at 5:15 p.m. for church. Saturdays we will close at 4:30 p.m.

Welcome to August! Can you believe... soon we will begin the last trimester of 2010! Unbelievable! It has been a wild year, so far. Lots of exciting things planned for the rest of the year, too!

We have had a wild week... first Ted and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary on Monday. Since we were not in SanFrancisco, we decided to do the next best thing and spend the day with our three grandsons in Monroe! I got back in the shop on Tuesday with many necklaces due out first thing! I have been beading every spare minute this week! And, I am not done yet! I love my job!

For those of you who have called, sent emails and/or facebook messages, I do apologize for not getting the blog posted! I had a program tonight in Pineville and just got in. Makes for a long day, for sure.

We have welcomed so many new customers to the shop this week! Thank you for continuing to tell folks about A BEAD BOUTIQUE! Over and over I hear from new customers that they heard about me from other customers! Thank you!

Pam and I will be in the shop today! My air conditioner is working, but not without struggling to keep the shop cool! We had lots of folks in the shop yesterday, including one of the Gypsy Beaders from Shreveport. They are getting ready for the Shreveport Bead Retreat next weekend. If you have not attended their retreat, you should make plans to attend one. Call me for more information.

Beading the Heat without Air Conditioning...

My air conditioner had a little problem today. By the afternoon the temperatures were rising inside A BEAD BOUTIQUE! I was so glad to see the repairman drive up. After a little while, the cool air started flowing! Thank Goodness! I won't take the air conditioner for granted!

Ginnie was chosen for Grand Jury Duty today. We will reschedule her tupperware show and sale soon.

It is hot outside... actually it was a little "hot" inside yesterday. The air conditioner just couldn't keep up with the temperature outside. Hopefully the "repair man" will check with us today, and get the air conditioner checked out.

The plan is for Ginnie to have her new TUPPERWARE items in the shop. There will be some cash and carry items, and you are welcomed to order from the catalog.

I have talked with several vendors and we are lining up several trunk shows. Remember that the shop will be closed from August 16 - 21. We will kick off our fall season when we return on the 24th of August. Watch for more information soon!

I hope that you have had a great weekend! The weeks at A BEAD BOUTIQUE fly by. We have been so busy, welcoming new customers to the shop. Quite a few have returned after being away for awhile. Everyone enjoyed Paula's INTRO TO PRECIOUS METAL CLAY class on Saturday. I even was able to make a couple of pieces on Friday night! I loved it!

There was so much interest in the class yesterday, that we have scheduled another INTRODUCTION TO PRECIOUS METAL CLAY class on Saturday, August 28th! The class starts at 9:30 a.m. and finishes around 4:30 p.m. with an hour lunch break. If you are interested in the class, please call me or email me. The cost for the class is $135, which includes all supplies, use of tools, and instruction. Space is limited, and I believe that we have four possible students as of yesterday.

This week we have had many new people through the shop. Yesterday we welcomed folks from SanAntonio, Wisconsin and Atlanta, Georgia. I love meeting new beading friends. It is also very exciting to hear their comments about A BEAD BOUTIQUE.

Are you interested in a seed bead tubing party? I am working to increase my seed bead and delica inventory, which is a labor intensive effort. Several have said that they would like to help with the "tubing" (which involves pouring the beads in the appropriate tube and weighing each tube to the specified weight... not rocket science, but somewhat tedious!) If you are interested, let me know. We'll be scheduling this fun day real soon!

We welcomed "10" first time visitors to A BEAD BOUTIQUE today! Marsha and Sharon came through Alexandria just to come to A BEAD BOUTIQUE! They are from Ohio. We had folks from all around central Louisiana, Lake Charles, Ville Platte, and a few I'm forgetting. Needless to say, I was one busy girl! (Yes, I was by myself! Pam will be back on Saturday!)

Friday, join me! Paula will be working with some students tomorrow evening. We are having a very "abbreviated" beadover. Call if you plan to come. We are doing things very differently this time. Reservations are required. Call me after noon Friday 318.442.2575.
